Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the SEC is moving to an all-conference schedule in 2020. While there won’t be a College Football Playoff this year, there will be an SEC Championship. It should come as no surprise that Alabama opens as the favorite to win it all as we prepare for this bizarre college football season.
Bama has won five of the last eight SEC Championships and oddsmakers expect them to win it all once again. At -143, Bama leads the field, but they are followed by the usual suspects. Georgia is opening at +200, closely followed by the reigning SEC and National Champion LSU Tigers at +650.
Georgia is the only team from the East Division to win the SEC Championship in the last 12 years. The Bulldogs throttled Auburn in the 2017 SEC Championship Game. They’ve gone to three-straight but lost to Alabama in 2018 and LSU in 2019. In both years, Georgia was facing off against the No. 1 ranked team in the country.
The top tier of SEC teams is rounded out by Florida (+1200), Texas A&M (+1400), and Auburn (+1600). The Gators are tied with Bama for the most SEC Championship Game appearances of all time, but the last time they came out on top in the game was in 2008 when Tim Tebow was playing quarterback for Urban Meyer. Florida is 7-5 all-time in the game with its most recent losses coming in 2015 and 2016.
After those three schools, there is a considerable dropoff. Kentucky and Tennessee are both listed at +10000. It would seem unlikely that either of these schools goes on a Cinderella run to win the SEC, but it’s 2020, stranger things have happened.
