Week 7 of the 2020 college football season includes arguably the best matchup of the year thus far. No. 2-ranked Alabama will take on No. 3-ranked Georgia in an SEC battle that could really shake things up for this year’s College Football Playoff. Alabama is undefeated at 3-0, coming off a 63-48 win over Ole Miss, while Georgia is additionally 3-0 after defeating Tennessee 44-21 on Saturday.

This game features two high-scoring offenses in what should be an eye-opener of a matchup.

Alabama-Georgia 2020 Betting Line

The Crimson Tide are currently 4-point favorites against the Bulldogs, as oddsmakers are favoring Alabama to emerge victoriously in a tight-knit battle. It’s an understandable spread that’s shrunk, considering Nick Saban will no longer be coaching the game due to his recent positive COVID-19 test. Either team is 3-0 as favorites against the spread thus far on the year. Oddsmakers additionally favor Alabama on the moneyline — the Crimson Tide are -182 in those regards while Georgia is at +138.

Per DraftKings Sportsbook, the total is set at 56.0, a mark that these teams will surely pass. Alabama is currently averaging 51.0 points per game while Georgia is averaging 36.0. Not to mention, Alabama’s defensive unit has struggled in 2020, allowing 30.3 points per contest. Abiding by the above information, expect the over to potentially hit in this matchup.

And for what it’s worth, Alabama has hit the over in all three of its games in 2020.

Other sportsbooks possess different odds though. FanDuel Sportsbook favors Alabama by 3.5 points and has the Crimson Tide -300 and Georgia +160 on the moneyline. The total is slightly different at over-under 56.5. For PointsBet Sportsbook, Alabama is favored by 4.5 points and is -191 on the moneyline while Georgia is +160. The over-under, like with FanDuel Sportsbook, is also at 56.5. FOXBet Sportsbook, on the other hand, has Alabama at -4 and -188 on the moneyline with Georgia +160. FOXBet has the total set at 57 points.

Game Preview and Betting Angles

As was previously mentioned, this game is crucial not just for the standings in the AP Top 25, but also for the College Football Playoff. One tough loss could ruin a specific team’s chances of earning a spot in the four-team playoff, and these squads realize that ahead of Saturday evening.

Despite the fact that they’re 3-0, the only impressing win the Crimson Tide have notched has been the victory over Texas A&M. At the time, the Aggies were ranked 13th in the country, and their matchup with Alabama is still their only loss on the year. But regardless, the talent Alabama fields is unbelievable.

Quarterback Mac Jones has been terrific, having thrown for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and only one pick on a 79.5% completion rate. A great portion of those passing yards has been reeled in by wideout Jaylen Waddle, who’s racked up 396 receiving yards and three touchdowns thus far.

But Alabama’s true No. 1 weapon is running back Najee Harris, who’s gained 347 yards on the ground on a 6.7 yards-per-carry rate with a whopping 10 touchdowns.

Facing a dominant Georgia defense will be a truly daunting task though — it’s a unit allowing just 12.3 points per game. The Bulldogs really impressed in their recent wins over Auburn (27-6) and Tennessee (44-21), a pair of ranked teams. Alabama’s high-powered offense going up against this defensive unit should be the main matchup that fans should pay attention to within this game. The efforts from those two respective units could ultimately determine the final outcome, which should carry much weight in regard to the standings.

But all in all, despite Georgia’s tough defense and impressive performances thus far on the year, I’d still take Alabama. Even without Saban for the game, the Crimson Tide should be well prepared for a matchup like this.

Alabama-Georgia Historical Matchup Stats

These two teams haven’t met since 2018, a campaign in which they went up against each other in the SEC Championship. Alabama won that meeting, but not by much, only defeating the Bulldogs by seven. Georgia did cover as underdogs in that game though, and the over hit as well. Earlier that year, these two teams faced one another in the 2017-18 College Football Playoff National Championship, a game in which Alabama won by a score of 26-23. Georgia covered at +3.5 and the over hit.

Alabama then defeated Georgia in 2015 and additionally in 2012. The Crimson Tide actually covered as underdogs in the 2015 matchup while Georgia covered at +8.5 three seasons prior, with the under hitting in 2015 but not in 2012.

Saban’s Positive COVID-19 Test

On Wednesday, it was announced Alabama head coach Nick Saban tested positive for COVID-19, along with athletic director Greg Byrne. He’ll be overseeing practices in a virtual setting while remaining in contact with his assistant coaches, and it’s unclear whether he’ll be able to carry out the same process when it comes to Saturday night’s crucial game. According to the CDC, those who test positive for the lingering virus must isolate themselves for 10 days, while the contract tracing procedure will employ a 14-day quarantine.

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will thus lead the in-person operations amid Saban’s absence. Sarkisian possesses head coaching experience, having coached for both Washington and USC in the past. Given that, along with Saban’s ability to still prepare his team for this matchup (albeit from home), I’ll still take Alabama in this matchup. Nonetheless, it’ll likely be a closer game than originally expected.

How to watch Alabama-Georgia

These two SEC powerhouses face off at 8:00 p.m. ET Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium (Tuscaloosa, AL) on CBS. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson, and Jamie Erdahl are on the call.

Betting Picks and Score Prediction

Despite Georgia’s successful defense, I believe Alabama finds a way to put points on the board, while the Bulldogs get the job done offensively against Alabama’s struggling defensive unit. But at the end of the night, the Crimson Tide make more plays en route to notching their fourth victory of the 2020 season.

Final Score Prediction: Alabama 38-30
