Despite the 2021 MLB season in the final stretch, there is never a bad time to bet futures. One of the most popular markets for baseball bettors is wagering on who will win the Cy Young in each league. The American League boasts arguably the two best pitchers in baseball between Shane Bieber and Gerrit Cole, but both have struggled or been injured. That opens up the futures market to other pitchers such as Lance Lynn or Carlos Rodon.

Let’s take a look at the odds to win, the opening odds, and some news that will be updated as the season progresses.

AL Cy Young Odds Timeline

  • Mid August 2021 – Lance Lynn odds rise again, he is -240 to win the AL Cy Young as of August 12th.
  • August 2021 – Cole continues to struggle, and Lance Lynn has now become the betting favorite to win AL Cy Young.
  • Mid July 2021 – After baseball’s crackdown on substances, the odds shift and Gerrit Cole’s Cy Young odds slide.
  • Early July 2021 – Gerrit Cole’s odds shot up to -175, with Carlos Rodon behind him. Glasnow and Bieber’s odds fell with injuries.
  • June 2021 – Odds shifted dramatically after John Means’ hot stretch for the O’s, while Danny Duffy joined the conversation.
  • May 2021 – Lucas Giolito’s early struggles caused his odds to fall, Cole and Bieber lead at the top.
  • April 2021 – As the MLB season begins, Cole and Bieber are the top favorites but Tyler Glasnow’s hot start took him up the rankgs.
  • March 2021 – Heading into the season, Gerrit Cole and Shane Bieber were favorites at the top.

  • Lance Lynn -240
  • Gerrit Cole +350
  • Carlos Rodon +750
  • Robbie Ray +1300
  • Everyone else is +4200 or longer

Opening Odds To Win 2021 AL Cy Young Award

A look at the opening odds and analysis before the MLB season started.

Player Odds to Win Cy Young
Gerrit Cole +350
Shane Bieber +400
Lucas Giolito +450
Tyler Glasnow +950
Hyun-Jin Ryu +1300
Jose Berrios +1700
Lance Lynn +1700
Corey Kluber +1800
Kenta Maeda +2000
Dallas Keuchel +2200

The AL Cy Young award will be one for the ages in 2021, especially if the opening odds are right and the race is as close as the prices are. The three at the top are Gerrit Cole, Shane Bieber, and Lucas Giolito all within a dollar of each other in terms of price. Of course, last year’s winner in Shane Bieber was projected to be the favorite to repeat, but Yankees’ starter Gerrit Cole leads the betting market at +350.

Last year, Bieber finished 8-1 with a ridiculous 1.63 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 77.1 innings of work. He allowed opposing batters to hit just .167, and lead the AL in all of the aforementioned categories. Cole was 7-3 with a 2.84 ERA and had 93 strikeouts in 73 innings of work. A terrific season, but not to Bieber’s standards. In terms of value, Bieber at +400 is a solid price given Cole is higher on opening odds.

Gerrit Cole AL Cy Young odds move to -125 on Memorial Day

With the first two months of the season in the books, let’s take a look a the updated AL Cy Young odds. Gerrit Cole is the favorite at -125, and is far ahead of the field so far. Here’s the latest odds:

Pitcher Odds to win AL Cy Young
Gerrit Cole -125
Shane Bieber +400
Tyler Glasnow +650
Carlos Rodon +1200
Lance Lynn +1500
John Means +2000
Lucas Giolito +3000
Aroldis Chapman +3000
Zack Greinke +3300
Hyun-Jin Ryu +3500
Jose Berrios +4000
Corey Kluber +4000
Danny Duffy +4000
Dylan Bundy +5000
Dylan Cease +5000
Cristian Javier +5000
Kenta Maeda +5000
Mike Minor +5000
Frankie Montas +5000
Zach Plesac +5000

Since the opening odds were released, Gerrit Cole has become the clear favorite as Shane Bieber has started the season slow (by his standards). There are some other players worth watching though. Cole is fourth on the ERA leaderboard, behing Carlos Rodon, Lance Lynn, and John Means. Each of their odds are +1200 or higher. Tyler Glasnow has 98 strikeouts already, and is +650. How about John Means, who has a no-hitter under his belt and has been one of the best pitchers in the American League so far in 2021.

There is some clear value in other pitchers right now for the AL Cy Young race, so be sure to hop in if you believe Cole could falter and/or a combination of a surge from other pitchers. Our bet? Means at +2000 is a great price, along with Bieber turning it around at +400.
