This has already been a wild year for the horse racing world and on Thursday, unexpected news of Nadal’s retirement surfaced. Nadal needed surgery after injuring his left leg during an early morning workout. He had two screws put in and although the injuries are not life-threatening, his racing career is over.

This is a tough blow for the horse racing community. Despite the dramatically altered schedule, many expected Nadal to make a strong push for the Triple Crown. He was an early favorite to win the 146th Kentucky Derby and one of the top horses coming into the 152nd Belmont Stakes.

Nadal’s departure from the sport changes the odds for this year’s Belmont Stakes. Although Nadal was originally listed as the third favorite to win the Belmont Stakes, many expected the Bob Baffert trained horse to challenge Charlatan and Tiz The Law for the top spot.

2020 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds

Tiz The Law — 5/2
Charlatan — 5/2
Dr Post — 12/1
Sole Valante — 15/1
Basin — 17/1
Farmington Road — 20/1
Gouverneur Morris — 22/1
Max Player — 24/1
Modernist — 30/1

Without Nadal, the 2020 Belmont Stakes is looking like a two-horse race. Dr Post, Sole Valante, and Basin are certainly in the mix, but Tiz The Law and Charlatan are clear favorites. With that said, it’s certainly possible that another horse drops out (or enters) and shakes up the betting odds once again.

Given the massive changes to this season’s schedule, the Belmont is actually taking place prior to the Kentucky Derby this year. This adds a new wrinkle to wagering on the race. Under normal circumstances, bettors would have already seen many of the horses run in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

The revamped schedule will now start with the Belmont on June 20. The Kentucky Derby (Sept. 5) and Preakness (Oct. 3) will follow thereafter. Expect more changes to come to the betting odds of all three races. The coronavirus pandemic has already changed so much for the sport of horse racing.
