Don’t look now, but the New York Yankees are cornering the betting market on the A.L. Pennant. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, more than half of the money put down on the 2020 American League winner are in favor of the Yanks.

With 56% of the handle and 46% of total bets, it’s clear that bettors are confident in the Yankees this year. The Yankees also lead baseball with an over-under of 38.5 wins.

The 2020 MLB season will be unlike any other. The 60-game schedule will be more akin to an all-out sprint, rather than the usual marathon. This could end up favoring the Yankees, who used the last few months to get fully healthy. James Paxton’s injury woes are long gone, plus Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks should be ready by Opening Day. And of course, the ace in the hole — Gerrit Cole — is the favorite to win the A.L. Cy Young this season after signing a monstrous nine-year deal this past offseason. There are few holes in the rotation, bullpen, or lineup.

Expect New York’s odds to shift with such a large percentage of the handle going to the Yankees. There is definitely value to be had among some of the other contenders in the A.L. Surprisingly, bettors are steering clear of the Houston Astros, another favorite to win the pennant. Don’t laugh if you are a Yankees fan at the Astros misfortune, a Yankee’s cheating scandal could be brewing.

New York’s divisional rival — the Tampa Bay Rays — are seeing plenty of action as well. Although they are only accounting for 7% of total bets, bettors are going heavy on the Rays with 20% of the total handle on Tampa.

There’s some surprising interest in the Chicago White Sox, who account for 9% of total handle. Part of that is likely due to the fact that the A.L. Central is wide open for the taking. The Minnesota Twins took home the A.L. Central crown in 2019 and the Cleveland Indians are still talented, but there’s definitely an avenue for Chicago to take advantage of the weak division.
