The College Football Playoff is here and two familiar foes — Clemson (9-1) and Ohio State (6-0) — will meet in the Sugar Bowl for a chance to advance to the National Championship. This is the second consecutive year that these two college football powerhouses will meet in the College Football semifinals. The Tigers got the better of the Buckeyes last year before falling to LSU in the National Championship.
Once again, it’s Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields squaring off in a massive game. NFL Draft scouts will be locked into this one. Lawrence is the consensus No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and Justin Fields has a strong case to go No. 2.

Game Preview and Betting Angles
Clemson vs. Ohio State is becoming a fixture in the College Football Playoff. This will mark the third time in five years that these two have met in the semifinal with Clemson winning both matchups.
Ohio State is undefeated coming into this game, but they have not played a full schedule. The Big Ten’s late start to the season plus multiple coronavirus cancelations limited the Buckeyes to just six games. They almost missed the Big Ten Championship Game due to not playing enough games, but the Big Ten changed the rules to allow the Buckeyes to play.
Will Ohio State take advantage of the opportunity to knock off Clemson and set up a National Championship date with Alabama or Notre Dame? Let’s take a deeper look at both teams.
Clemson Game Notes
Trevor Lawrence isn’t going to win the Heisman Trophy due to his two missed games earlier this year, but he is the best player in college football. The junior already has a National Championship under his belt and he’s looking for one more before he leaves for the NFL. The Tigers are undefeated with Lawrence under center this year. Their only loss came to Notre Dame while Lawrence was still recovering from COVID-19.
Running back Travis Etienne is having another fantastic season for the Tigers. He has over 1,500 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns on the season. Defenses have to pick their poison when it comes to this Clemson offense. If they drop back into coverage to protect against Lawrence’s arm, Etienne will gash teams up the middle. However, if they load up the box to slow down the run game, Lawrence will take the top off the defense with the play-action game.
Defensively, Clemson is ranked 11th in the country in scoring. They are only allowing 17.5 points per game and are coming off of a dominant defensive performance against Notre Dame in the ACC Championship Game.
Ohio State Game Notes
Although Lawrence is the golden boy of college football, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields can go toe-to-toe with anyone on the gridiron. Despite a slight dropoff in his passing production over the last three games of the season, Fields is still one of the more accurate quarterbacks in college football. If he can avoid turnovers, he should have Ohio State in this game until the very end.
Ohio State is led on offense by Fields, but they have weapons all over the place. Their two-headed monster in the backfield consists of Trey Sermon and Master Teague. That duo has combined for 1,124 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in six games. They aren’t much of a threat to catch the ball, but Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave are two excellent pass-catchers for Fields.
Ohio State’s defense has yet to face anyone quite like Clemson this year. They struggled to keep Indiana’s offense in check earlier this year and the Tigers have a much deeper, more talented roster than the Hoosiers. This will be the biggest test of the year for Ohio State.
Clemson – Ohio State History
Clemson is a perfect 4-for-4 against Ohio State overall. The Buckeyes are going to be out for blood after the Tigers ended their season last year. Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields went back and forth in last year’s Fiesta Bowl, but costly interceptions were the ultimate difference in the six-point game. Make no mistake about it, Fields needs to take care of the football in order for the Buckeyes to avenge last year’s loss.

Prediction: Clemson Wins, Ohio State Covers
Although Ohio State did not look dominant against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game, they are the real deal this year. Clemson is not going to come into this game and roll them like they have to so many teams this year. Trevor Lawrence and the Tigers will get the win, but Ohio State will keep it a one-score game. Take the Buckeyes getting the points.
Final Score Prediction: Clemson wins 34-31
