Who could complain about college football on a Monday? Not us. BYU and Navy are kicking off their 2020 seasons with a primetime battle on Monday night.
Although some conferences like the Big 10 and Pac-12 decided to cancel the season, there are plenty of other conferences still forging ahead with football in 2020. Independent BYU and American Athletic Conference’s Navy are set to tangle in a game that oddsmakers project to be close.
BYU – Navy Betting Odds
BYU open this game as slight favorites over Navy, who is sitting at even money on the moneyline. It’s tough to know what to expect from either team in the first game of the season so this game is a toss-up.
The total points opened at 48.5. Navy is one of the few schools left in the country that runs the spread option and their ground-based attack lends itself to low-scoring games.
BYU – Navy Preview & Betting Angles
Navy is coming off of a successful 11-2 season in 2019, but they are going to look different in 2020. For one, they lost their quarterback Malcolm Perry to the NFL. He ran for over 2,000 yards last season and was a key reason for Navy’s success.
Despite losing their quarterback, we still expect to see Navy play the same style they have for years. The Midshipmen tend to grind out wins by converting long drives into points. Possession is the name of the game when Navy plays.
BYU, on the other hand, likes to air it out. The Cougars will have Zach Wilson under center on Monday night. Wilson was the starter in 2019, but missed four games with an injury. Although he only put up 11 touchdowns last season, Wilson is capable of going off at a moment’s notice.
Unfortunately, Wilson will be without one of his top targets. Matt Bushman, who flirted with the NFL after last season, recently suffered a season-ending injury.
BYU is trying to bounce back after finishing with a 7-6 record in 2019. The independent school put together an eight-game schedule for the 2020 season.
BYU – Navy Historical Matchup
There isn’t much history between BYU and Navy. This will only be the third meeting between the Cougars and the Midshipmen. The schools are 1-1 against each other with BYU winning the last game between these two schools in 1989. The Holiday Bowl in 1978 was the only time the two met prior to that.
Where To Watch BYU – Navy
This game is taking a primetime slot on ESPN on Monday. Kick-off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET in Annapolis, MD on Navy’s home field. Fans can also stream this game via ESPN+.
Betting Picks & Score Prediction
Stay away from the total points in this one. Navy’s ground-based attack and the uncertainty of Week 1 make the over a risky play. It can definitely happen if BYU comes out firing on all cylinders, but it’s too much of a risk to invest heavily in.
Navy moneyline is the pick for Monday’s game. It’s hard to see Navy have a huge dropoff after such a great 2019 season. They’re even money on the moneyline at BetMGM Sportsbook. Those odds are too good to pass up.
Final score prediction: Navy wins 27-20
