Who is the public betting on?
The public betting report is not out on Georgia-Clemson yet, but we expect there to be a fairly even split among the public. Georgia and Clemson have played each other 64 times, but this will be their first meeting since 2014, a game the Bulldogs won by 24.
Georgia was just 4-6 against the spread last season, but Clemson wasn’t much better at 5-7. However, don’t read too far into the stats from last year. Both schools are undergoing changes at key positions.
Let’s take a closer look at this matchup.
Georgia vs. Clemson Game Notes
There is no such thing as a “must-win game” in September, but this is as close as it gets. A win for either school would help solidify their chances to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff. Georgia has a relatively easy schedule and they could use a signature win early. The same can be said of Clemson, a team that plays in the weaker ACC. Aside from this game, Georgia and Clemson combine to play one team that is ranked in the Preseason AP Poll Top 25.
Clemson is handing over the program to D.J. Uiagalelei after Trevor Lawrence led the Tigers to their sixth-consecutive CFP appearance. Uiagalelei has big shoes to fill, but he appears ready for the job. He did a fantastic job filling in last season while Lawrence was shelved with COVID-19. Although Clemson lost one of Uiagalelei’s starts to Notre Dame, the freshman quarterback showed up. He threw for over 400 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in the losing effort. On the other side of the field, the Bulldogs have JT Daniels. The former USC quarterback is going to have the reigns in Athens.
Historically, Clemson and Georgia are two teams that get off to fast starts. They both have impressive opening day winning streaks coming into this game. Something’s gotta give.

The most interesting matchup won’t be seen on the field, but rather on the sidelines. Kirby Smart is a defensive guru who constantly churns out elite defenses. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is more of an offensive guy.
Smart may have ruffled some feathers with his offseason comments on recruiting outside of the SEC. Although he didn’t come out and say it explicitly, Smart was poking Dabo Swinney by saying that other coaches tell recruits the SEC is too competitive.

As of Monday afternoon, that total is already down to 43. This is a complete no-brainer.
Georgia vs. Clemson Pick Week 1
The value here is on Georgia to cover the spread. This game should be close in the fourth quarter and at that point, Georgia should be able to cover that 3.5-point spread.
