The SEC opened its year in Week 4 of the college football season, but the first marquee game comes between Georgia and Auburn in Week 5. This is a battle between two SEC powerhouses. Both teams are in the top 25 of the AP Poll and are considered legitimate contenders to win the College Football Championship.
Georgia is the higher-ranked team and the home team. That will mean less in today’s world with reduced crowd sizes, but it definitely matters for something.
Georgia – Auburn Betting Line[metabet_core_game_tile query=”cfb/georgia” site_id=”actionrush”]
Despite Auburn’s top-10 status, Georgia opens this game as a significant favorite. The Bulldogs are -6.5 on the spread line and -250 on the moneyline. That moneyline spread converts to an approximate 71% chance to win for Georgia. Auburn isn’t getting much respect going into this SEC grudge match.
The total points are set to 45 so it’s clear that oddsmakers don’t expect this game to turn into a shootout. Rather, expect a defensive battle between two of the better teams in the country.
Game Preview & Betting Angles
The SEC season started last week, but the season really starts rolling now. This is the first matchup between top 10 teams this season and there will be National Championship aspirations on the line when Georgia hosts Auburn.
Both teams opened up their seasons with convincing wins. Georgia cruised to a 37-10 victory over Arkansas on the road while Auburn dispatched with then-No. 23 Kentucky 29-13. So far so good for these College Football Playoff hopefuls. But making it out of the SEC and into the College Football Playoff will be no small feat.
The Bulldogs struggled early last Saturday but turned to backup quarterback Stetson Bennett to turn the tide. D’Wan Mathis started the game 8-for-17 with an interception before Bennett came in and saved the day. The junior threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns on 20-for-29 passing. Simply put, Georgia looked like a different team with Bennett leading the offense.
Auburn’s first win didn’t require a quarterback change. Kentucky hung with Auburn threw the first three quarters, but the Tigers pulled away with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Bo Nix started off his sophomore season with a strong performance, throwing for 233 yards and three scores.
Up and down the roster, Georgia is the deeper football team. They simply have more talent at most positions, but it’s unwise to overlook the quarterbacks in this game.
Although he still has room to grow as a quarterback, Nix is the unquestioned starter for Auburn and has a ton of SEC experience. Georgia, on the other hand, is still trying to figure out who their quarterback is going to be for next week. Will head coach Kirby Smart go back to Mathis after his rough outing? Is Stetson Bennett a flash in the pan or a long-term answer? When will USC transfer JT Daniels be medically cleared to play?
There’s a lot of uncertainty at the quarterback position for the Bulldogs and that’s not great news in a big game. This could come down to a few plays in the fourth quarter.
Georgia – Auburn Historical Matchup Stats
This is called the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” for a reason. The historical matchup is fairly even with Georgia holding the advantage at 60-56-8 and but the Bulldogs have owned the Tigers over the last 10 seasons. Georgia is on a three-game winning streak and has won eight of the last 10 against Auburn.
Bo Nix nearly led the Tigers on a massive comeback against Georgia last season but fell short. Georgia held a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter, but Nix and company were able to cut that to a one-score game with seven minutes left. Nonetheless, the Bulldogs recovered to stop the Tigers from tying the game twice down the stretch.
How To Watch Georgia – Auburn
This is a top-10 matchup between National Championship hopefuls, so it’s no surprise Georgia – Auburn is going to be a primetime game on ESPN. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. ET, but ESPN has yet to announce the broadcast team for this game.
Betting Picks & Score Prediction
Georgia is probably the better team overall, but give me the experience at quarterback in what should be a close matchup. Take Auburn with the points simply because we still don’t have much clarity on Georgia’s quarterback situation.
Nix and Auburn should be motivated to beat Georgia after losing a close game in 2019. They might not be able to pull it off in enemy territory, but we expect this one to be close until the end. For that reason, Auburn with the 6.5-point spread is too good to pass up.
Final Score Prediction: Auburn 24-21
