The race for the Heisman Trophy is heating up and the two lead dogs are SEC quarterbacks. Florida’s Kyle Trask is still the odds-on favorite to win the prestigious award, but Mac Jones of Alabama is on his heels.
Although Florida’s offense started slowly against Kentucky on Saturday, Trask continued his scorching hot pace with 256 yards and three touchdowns. The Texas native is up to 34 touchdowns and just three interceptions on the season.
Jones led the way for the Crimson Tide in a rout of Auburn in the Iron Bowl. The junior completed 18 of 26 attempts for 302 yards and five touchdowns. Over his last three games, Jones has thrown for 11 touchdowns and just one interception.
Trask and Jones are set for a collision course in the SEC Championship Game. Florida and Alabama are in first place in their respective divisions and both teams have winnable games left on the schedule. Seeing the two favorites to win the Heisman face off in a potential play-in game for the College Football Playoff would be incredible for college football fans.
Updated Heisman Trophy Odds
Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields were among the favorites just a few weeks ago, but they are both significant underdogs to win the Heisman at this point. Lawrence went a full month without playing before returning to the field this past Saturday. He threw for 403 yards and two touchdowns, but it might be too little too late for the top NFL prospect.
Fields has fallen for similar reasons. Ohio State has only played four games this year and if they have another game cancelled due to COVID-19, the Buckeyes won’t be able to play in the Big Ten Championship Game. There is no way Fields wins the Heisman Trophy after only playing in five games.
