After another week of college football, the race for the Heisman Trophy is still trending in the same direction. Trevor Lawrence is still the odds-on favorite to win the coveted award, but Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is trending upwards.
The Clemson quarterback is absolutely dominating ACC play right now. Lawrence put together another ridiculous stat line against Georgia Tech over the weekend. The junior threw for 404 yards and five touchdowns on 24-for-32 passing. Although he threw his first interception of the season, it hardly slowed Clemson down. The Tigers would beat Georgia Tech 73-7 in an absolute beatdown.
But don’t sleep on Mac Jones. He led Alabama to a statement win over previously No. 3 Georgia. Jones posted a stat line that was almost identical to Lawrence’s. The only difference was he threw for one fewer touchdown than his ACC counterpart. With that said, Georgia’s defense is leaps and bounds better than Georgia Tech’s this year. Context is everything.
While Lawrence and Jones are well on their way to dominant seasons, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is preparing for his year to start. Fields trails Jones and Lawrence in Heisman Trophy odds right now, but that could all change soon. Ohio State will play their first game of the season against Nebraska this weekend and it will be the first chance for Heisman voters to get a look at the 2020 version of Fields.
The junior quarterback is the only Heisman Trophy finalist from last season who is back in college football. Joe Burrow is off playing quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals and defensive lineman Chase Young is chasing down NFL quarterbacks for the Washington Football Team.
We’ll see how Lawrence, Jones, Fields, and the rest of the Heisman hopefuls fare in Week 8 of the college football season. All odds via FanDuel Sportsbook.
