PointsBet

The PointsBet Illinois Sportsbook app is live for Week 1 of the NFL season and bettors still have time to sign up with mobile registration. In-person registration for online sports betting is suspended until Sept. 19 per an executive order from Governor J.B. Pritzker. This gives PointsBet an opportunity to attract new users before the state goes back to in-person registration.

In order to skirt around legislation that required online-only sportsbooks to wait 18 months to launch, PointsBet Sportsbook partnered with Hawthorne Race Course last summer. This legal provision was known as a “penalty box” and it was intended to keep out operators like DraftKings and FanDuel.

Luckily for Illinois sports betting fans, the industry leaders worked out partnership deals that circumvent this provision. This partnership gives PointsBet four retail sportsbooks throughout the state with the main location in Stickney, IL.

“The PointsBet team is excited to share that we are now officially live in Illinois, our fourth state of operation in the US,” said Johnny Aitken, PointsBet USA CEO. “The passionate sports fans in the state can now experience our leading online sports betting product and see for themselves why we’ve long stated that the best product experience will win. PointsBet possesses competitive advantages by owning our technology environment from end to end, such as unrivaled speed and ease of use on a personalized platform. We, together with our partner Hawthorne Race Course, are thrilled to provide the Illinois consumer with exactly what they’ve been craving.”

Illinois is one of the biggest markets in the country right now. In terms of population, Illinois is second behind Pennsylvania for states with mobile sports betting. New York is larger than both, but while sports betting is legal in the Empire State, mobile sports betting is not. That limits the number of residents who can join the action.

Similarly, when Illinois reverts to in-person registration, it will limit the number of users who will sign up with mobile sportsbooks like PointsBet. In the meantime, PointsBet is live in Illinois and the launch couldn’t come at a better time.
