Heisman Trophy Odds 2020

The race for the Heisman Trophy took a significant turn this weekend. While Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been the odds-on favorite to win it all year, he’s dropping after testing positive for COVID-19. Justin Fields and Mac Jones are now in front of the pack at +150 odds to win it.

First and foremost, we all hope Lawrence makes a full recovery from COVID-19 and can return to the field as soon as possible. However, the positive diagnosis is putting a damper on his chances to raise the Heisman Trophy this year.

He tested positive on Wednesday and had to miss Saturday’s game against Boston College. Moreover, due to the timing of his test results, he will have to miss next weekend’s marquee matchup against Notre Dame. To be clear, Lawrence is still right there in the mix with Fields and Jones, but he’s no longer the presumptive favorite to win the Heisman.

Justin Fields Co-Favored

Fields is off to a tremendous start through his first two games, putting up 594 passing yards and seven total touchdowns. The Ohio State Buckeyes are going to be favorites in the rest of their games against Big Ten competition. That means that Fields will have the chance to put up huge numbers despite only having eight games on the schedule.

Mac Jones Steady At The Top

Jones is quietly putting up ridiculous numbers for the Alabama Crimson Tide. The junior quarterback has 17 total touchdowns against just two interceptions. Bama is steamrolling their SEC competition this year and Jones is the biggest reason why. This past weekend he erupted for 291 yards and four touchdowns in Bama’s 41-point blowout of Mississippi State.

Odds To Win The Heisman

At this point in the season, Lawrence, Jones, and Fields appear to have the inside track at the Heisman Trophy but there are still a few dark horses in the mix. Florida quarterback Kyle Trask was one of the early favorites this year, but Florida was forced to miss two consecutive weeks of football after a COVID-19 outbreak.

The possibility of an outbreak shutting down a player or a team is always out there and it could have major effects on the Heisman race as the season goes on.
