After the NBA All Star break, the final stretch of basketball begins before the NBA Playoffs. With the end of February looming, there is only six weeks left until the regular season ends. This means the teams out of the race are beginning their “tank”, teams that have terrific records are resting some of their best players on back-to-backs, and we are really starting to see the separation from the contenders and pretenders. Thanks to the legal sports betting space, we can now bet on who we believe will win the 2020 NBA Finals at any time.
DraftKings Sportsbook provides us with the odds to win the NBA Finals, and how the public is betting the numbers. The results may surprise you, let’s take a look.
Lakers Hold Over One-Third of the Betting Handle

The Los Angeles Lakers are not the favorites, but based on the liability they present to DraftKings, expect those odds to climb. The Lakers have over one-third of the total dollars wagered and 25% of the total bets. Bettors believe LeBron James and Anthony Davis can carry the Lakers to the promised land.
If you count the other Los Angeles team, a total of 44% of the betting handle and 36% of the total bets are on the city having a parade of some sort. The Lakers sit atop the Western Conference standings, holding a five-game lead over the Nuggets. Are they the most equipped to win the NBA Finals? Bettors seem to think so.
Milwaukee Bucks A Value?
The Bucks have been utterly dominant this season, as they will be the first team to win 50 games, have the reigning MVP in Giannis Antetokounmpo, lead the NBA in points per game (120) and their average differential is over a dozen points per game. For lack of better terms, the Bucks are crushing everybody. Milwaukee is not just a one-man show though, as Khris Middletown has had a terrific season as Antetokounmpo’s “robin”, averaging over 22 points per game, and the Bucks have Eric Bledsoe, Brook Lopez, and a variety of experienced veterans to help guide the younger players through the playoffs.
Only 9% of the total handle is on the Bucks to win, at at +240 they are the favorite. Is there value in that bet? The Bucks are by far the best team in the Eastern Conference, so +240 is a solid number to gauge a future bet on, certainly. Remember, if they make the Finals you have a +240 bet to play/hedge with.
Clippers or Lakers?
Without a doubt, the betting public loves both Los Angeles teams to win the NBA Finals. Now, which team is the better bet?
The Clippers do not have as good of a record, but they have made it clear they plan to rest their players before the playoffs. Kawhi Leonard has only played 44 games, Paul George has played 35 games, and no player averages over 32.1 minutes per contest. The Clippers clearly have one of the best rosters in the NBA, and it could be argued they have the most depth of any roster…by far. Expect more and more bets to be placed on the Clippers as the playoffs near, given their strategy in the regular season.
