“With the 15th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select Mac Jones, quarterback, Alabama.”
Many Patriots fans were elated to hear these words uttered by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, as he now becomes the awaited heir for Tom Brady and the Patriots’ quarterback of the future. With that said, will he be the starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2021 season? You can bet on that at various legal sportsbook apps.

Odds to be Patriots Starting QB in Week 1
Here is a look at the latest odds to be the Patriots’ starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season.
Quarterback | Odds to Start in Week 1 for NE |
Cam Newton | -286 |
Mac Jones | +300 |
Jarrett Stidham | +800 |
These odds have shifted since the market opened, as Cam Newton opened as the -400 favorite with Mac Jones at +500 to be the starter. After initial betting, the odds have risen in Jones’ favor at +300 to start in Week 1.
Given the Patriots selected Mac Jones with the 15th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, the odds are he will play at some point in 2021. The question is, will Newton start first? The betting public seems to be backing the rookie, but Newton did sign for the 2021 season.
Will Cam Newton start for the Patriots in Week 1?
On the surface, the Patriots signed Cam Newton to a one year deal worth close to $14M. This is why the intricacies of the contracts are so important though, as Newton’s deal is incentive-laden. Take a look at the details in this tweet from Albert Breer.
A little more on Patriots QB Cam Newton's 1-year deal.
• $2M signing bonus.
• $1.5M base (fully guaranteed).
• $1.5M in per-game roster bonuses.
• $100K Workout bonus.
• $8.5M in incentives*.* incentives for playtime, playtime/playoffs, Pro Bowl, All-Pro, Super Bowl MVP.

This certainly indicates that the Patriots could easily just start Jones and have Newton as the backup quarterback, contractually. With both under contract though, it will be Bill Belichick’s decision. Newton struggled to pass the football last season, but had success on the ground. If he’s healthy in 2021, there could be massive improvement that would be worth having him as a starter while Mac Jones learns the ins and outs of the NFL. There is a similar situation in Chicago, but Matt Nagy has made it clear that Justin Fields is likely to sit behind Andy Dalton at this point.
