It is officially March and that means the Big Dance is almost here. March Madness is one of the best times of the year for college basketball fans and sports bettors in general, but you don’t have to wait for the NCAA Tournament to start to get in on the action. There are odds out on which teams are going to lock down No. 1 seeds with Gonzaga taking home the lion’s share of the total handle.
The Bulldogs are bringing in 75% of the cash put down on this market despite only accounting for 5% of bet tickets. That means a small group of people is putting a massive amount of money down on Gonzaga at -10000. Mark Few’s squad is almost guaranteed a top seed even if they are somehow upset in the West Coast Conference Tournament.
Teams To Get A #1 Seed
After Gonzaga, there are a bunch of Big 10 teams on the board — Illinois (+150), Ohio State (+550), Iowa (+700), and Michigan (-10000). The Illini just trounced Michigan in Ann Arbor to put themselves in an excellent position to enter the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed. Illinois is attracting the most bet tickets of any team in this market.
When we break it down, it’s clear that Villanova (+400) and Virginia (+2000) are fighting for the last No. 1 seed. Gonzaga is a lock and the committee is likely going to go with two teams from the Big 10. That leaves Villanova and Virginia.
If Nova can avoid a major upset the rest of the way, they appear to have the inside track over the Cavaliers. However, an early exit for Villanova in the Big East Tournament combined with a Virginia ACC Tournament win could be enough to tip the scales. Either way, the battle for a No. 1 seed is going to be interesting all the way up until the bracket is announced on Selection Sunday.
