Montana is the latest state in the news for legal sports betting, as 2019 comes to a close.
The state announced that it will begin to take applications from potential places of business around the state that want to offer sports betting terminals.
Montana Lottery Director Angela Wong expresses her excitement:
“Today is a big day for Sports Bet Montana. We’ve been working a long time for this and we’re excited to see that hard work pay off and excited to start the process of launching sports betting.”
Sports Bet Montana
“Sports Bet Montana” is the name of the sports betting product in Montana. Given the way the law in Montana is written, bettors can only bet at sports betting kiosks, or within a mobile app connected to a kiosk.
These kiosks are powered by “Intralot”, who has the exclusive contract for Montana Lottery offerings as well as sports betting now.
Obtaining Sports Betting Terminals in Montana
Montana is set to be a different state in terms of sports betting, as a few licenses have to be in place before obtaining a sports betting “license” to obtain betting terminals.
In Montana, establishments need to have a liquor license, and a lottery sports wagering license in order to get access.
After proper vendors are approved, those places of business (bars, etc) will be able to install “Sports Bet Montana” terminals via the Montana Lottery to offer betting and such.
Mobile Sports Betting in Montana
Kiosks are the first step for Montana, but mobile betting will be a longer process. With that being said, given the timeline of the kiosks being taken for applications, the very next step is betting online on your mobile device in Montana at a retail location.
The problem is, it is only available at these locations of business where kiosks can be found. For such a big state, that is a disappointment due to the way the law was written, but with nearly 1,500 locations potentially adding kiosks, sports betting in Montana is getting close.
