Betting on a hot dog eating contest might sound crazy. Check that, betting on a hot dog eating contest definitely sounds crazy, but you can LEGALLY do it now in three states.
Bettors in the following states can bet on Nathan’s hot dog eating contest:
- New Jersey
- New Hampshire
The Hot Dog Eating Contest is a Fourth of July tradition. What could be more American than stuffing your face with hot dogs? Although it’s definitely a niche sport, the Fourth of July is a day for competitive eating to shine. The fact that bettors can legally wager on the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest adds further credibility to the sport.
“ESPN had already affirmed us as a sport in the early 2000s,” said Rich Shea, president of Major League Eating. “But, with legal betting, we are really now as legitimate as the NFL and the NBA.”
What To Look For When Betting
So what should bettors consider before placing their hot dog bets? Well, Joey Chestnut is the greatest competitive eater of all time and has won this competition 12 of the last 13 times. Of the female eaters, Miki Sudo is the heavy betting favorite after winning six times in a row.
Chestnut and Sudo would appear to be the safe bet, but much like other sports, Nathan’s is altering the format of the competition to adhere to health and safety guidelines.
“There are a lot of factors at play,” Shea said. “Our eaters are usually in midseason form. They’re gonna be rusty. Plus you have the fact that social distancing and fewer contestants will give eaters more room, you have air conditioning instead of the 100-degree heat and you have no crowd.”
