After a terrific opening week of the 2020 NFL Playoffs, the Divisional Round is upon us. With four elite finishes in the Wild Card Round, the Divisional Round has a lot of hype to live up to.
Given the popularity of betting on the NFL Playoffs, William Hill Sportsbook has provided a list of betting odds and trends for the Divisional Round in the form of spreads, moneylines, and total (over/under) bets.
This shows the percentage of tickets, dollars wagered, and other interesting tidbits to help bettors look at who the public likes for the Divisional Round. With the 2020 Super Bowl just weeks away, the NFL betting window is closing rapidly for this season.
Betting Public is Heavy On The 49ers
|Game||Spread||Percentage of Tickets||Percentage of Money|
|Vikings vs 49ers||SF -7||73% 49ers||75% 49ers|
|Titans vs Ravens||BAL -9||55% Ravens||59% Ravens|
|Texans vs Chiefs||KC -9.5||61% Chiefs||65% Texans|
|Seahawks vs Packers||GB -4||59% Seahawks||52% Packers|
Spread betting in the public eye is the most attractive in terms of seeing how the public is betting.
For the Divisional Round, there is a lot of money on the favorites, with 75% of the money coming in on the 49ers to cover seven points against the Vikings, and also 59% of the money on the Ravens to cover nine points against the Titans. This is a bit odd given how many bettors lost money last week against the Vikings, as sometimes recency bias will rear its head.
As you can see, only one game has a ton of money and tickets skewed one way and that is the 49ers over the Vikings, the rest are close to 50-55%, which is what William Hill US wants.
Two interesting pieces to consider is the Texans have 65% of the money, but the Chiefs have 61% of the tickets. This means heavy money has come in on the Texans +9.5. The other is the Packers have 52% of the money, but only 41% of the tickets, indicating the same.
NFL Playoffs Moneyline Public Bets
|Game||Moneyline||Percentage of Tickets||Percentage of Money|
|Vikings vs 49ers||MIN +250 SF -300||78% Vikings||51% Vikings|
|Titans vs Ravens||TEN +360 BAL -440||71% Titans||95% Titans|
|Texans vs Chiefs||HOU +370 KC -450||75% Texans||75% Texans|
|Seahawks vs Packers||SEA +170 GB -190||85% Seahawks||54% Seahawks|
There is a lot of money on the Titans this week in terms of the money line, with 95% of the total betting money (on MLs) is set on them at +360. The Super Bowl favored Ravens come in at a hefty -440 ML, which is certainly not attractive to most bettors.
These numbers should not be too surprising, as there is plenty of value in the NFL for moneyline betting given the prices.
While the favorites are always likelier to win, in the off chance there is an upset bettors can make more than double their money on large underdogs.
Very Heavy Action On Seattle-Green Bay Under
|Game||Total||Percentage of Tickets||Percentage of Money|
|Vikings vs 49ers||45||52% UNDER||62% UNDER|
|Titans vs Ravens||47||63% UNDER||58% UNDER|
|Texans vs Chiefs||50.5||58% OVER||56% UNDER|
|Seahawks vs Packers||46||81% UNDER||93% UNDER|
By nature, most bettors and football fans like to bet on the over. For one, everyone likes to see points scored. Secondary, in today’s NFL with the rules skewed towards offenses there is more and more points scored each season.
That is what makes this set of numbers crazy, as there is way more money on the under in all games. The only section here that has more over than under is the total tickets for Texans and Chiefs at over 50.5, but 56% of the total money is still on the under.
William Hill is certainly hoping for some high-scoring games this week.
