With one game remaining in the NFL‘s Week 7 slate of matchups — Rams vs. Bears on Monday Night Football — we’re now able to take a look at the opening lines for Week 8. And boy, is there a massive spread that catches the eye at first glance.
The 6-1 Chiefs open up as huge favorites over the winless Jets, with the line at a whopping -20.5 for Kansas City. This is understandable, considering the Jets’ lack of talent on either side of the ball in comparison to the Chiefs’ high-powered offense and productive defense that’s allowing just 20.4 points per game (ninth in the NFL). Nonetheless, taking the Jets may be the move here. Over the last 17+ seasons, underdogs of at least 20 points are 6-1 against the spread. And considering Gang Green kept the Bills in check for much of Sunday’s defeat, there’s a chance the Jets could be improving (slightly, at least).
Another game to pay attention to is the Seahawks-49ers matchup, which takes place Sunday afternoon at 4:25 p.m. ET. Seattle opens up as a 1-point favorite despite its Week 7 Sunday Night Football loss at the hands of the Cardinals. The 49ers, on the other hand, are coming off a blowout victory over New England in which they ousted the Cam Newton-led Pats 33-6.
Probably the most surprising spread of the week is for the Ravens-Steelers meeting, with Baltimore opening up as a 5.5-point favorite. The Steelers are the sole undefeated ballclub in the NFL after their 27-24 victory over the Titans moved them to 6-0. The Ravens are currently a wild card team at 5-1, but home-field advantage for Week 8 might be what’s forcing the oddsmakers to provide them with the edge.
