Betting splits for the NHL’s Qualifying Round are all over the place. There’s plenty of uncertainty heading into the NHL’s restart given the long layoff, the volatility of a five-game series, and the possibility of key players going down with coronavirus.
Heavy On The Favorites
Bettors are almost literally “all-in” on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the qualifying round. Pittsburgh is garnering 97% of all tickets placed on the series and a whopping 98% of the handle. The public is avoiding the Montreal Canadiens like the plague.
This makes sense considering the Penguins are seen as a viable Stanley Cup contender while the Canadiens were struggling just prior to the shutdown. Montreal only won four of their last 14 games and secured 10 out of a possible 28 points. The Pens also struggled down the stretch, but their overall body of work from the 2019-20 regular season has bettors confident going into this five-game series.
Going Big On The Underdog
While the Penguins are the only favorite to see a jaw-dropping split in their favor, bettors are going big on a few underdogs. For one, the New York Rangers are pulling in 73% of tickets ahead of their series against the Carolina Hurricanes. But that’s not all, New York accounts for 86% of all cash put down on the series.
The Winnipeg Jets (69%) is another underdog who is raking in the vast majority of cash put down on its respective series as well.
