Let’s start with Villanova. There’s a reason why so many people picked Winthrop to upset the Wildcats in the first round. They are without senior point guard Collin Gillespie after he went down with a knee injury prior to the Big East Tournament. Villanova was 0-2 without Gillespie entering the Big Dance.
However, they seemed to have regained their mojo against Winthrop. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl stepped up in Gillespie’s absence, scoring 22 points, hauling in 11 rebounds, and dishing out five assists. There’s something about Villanova in the NCAA Tournament that you can’t put your finger on. Jay Wright’s teams always seem to come ready to play when the lights are bright.
As for North Texas, they took Purdue’s best punch in the first round, but wouldn’t go down. The Mean Green lean heavily on the starters and for good reason. Four different North Texas starters scored in double figures against Purdue with Javion Hamlet leading the way with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists.
Hamlet is the straw that stirs the drink for North Texas. He’s averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 assists per game. Look for North Texas to try and take advantage of this shorthanded Villanova backcourt.
