Which States Have Legal Sports Betting?
The First State, ironically, became the first state again, to offer full-access sports betting (aside from Nevada). Leading up to full-access sports betting, Delaware had been offering NFL parlay betting. In Delaware, you can only bet at one of the state’s three casinos: Delaware Park, Dover Downs, and Harrington Casino. Delaware Online Sports betting is legal, but not available. The Delaware Lottery is in control of sports betting, so an application will need to be released accordingly.
Just nine days after Delaware offered betting, New Jersey followed suit. The main difference between the two states is that New Jersey has mobile sports betting, with a slew of online sportsbook options throughout the state for residents and visitors.
Like Delaware, Mississippi does not have mobile betting. That is the case simply because of the law, as the law will only allow retail-only sports betting. Rumors are pointing to Mississippi Sports Betting expanding to online/mobile sportsbooks in 2020.
Residents and visitors of West Virginia can enjoy full access to sports betting, by betting online and at retail sportsbooks. In the beginning, the West Virginia online sports betting experience failed with BetLucky, but with DraftKings and FanDuel Sportsbook WV active in the state, that is old news.
The smallest state in the country also has the smallest number of options to bet, as the only way to bet in Rhode Island is by visiting two of the casinos (Twin Rivers Casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton) and placing bets. Rhode Island sports betting has recently expanded to online, but it is run by the lottery, thus very limited.
The Keystone State has some of the most strict rules and regulations in the country, with a massive 36% tax on sports betting revenue, but PA residents and visitors are able to bet at casinos, sportsbooks, and online. Like New Jersey, there are numerous choices for online sportsbooks.
Sports betting has been “legal” in the state of New York since 2013, but no bets were taken until 2019. New Yorker’s and visitors 21 and over can bet at casinos and sportsbooks in-person, but not online. In addition, Tribal casinos are permitted to offer sports betting as well. New York online sports betting is expected to happen sometime in 2020.
You can bet on the Razorbacks and more in Arkansas, but only at one of the states four options. Arkansas is quite a large state to only have four options to bet, and all must be in person. There is no online sports betting in Arkansas.
There are eight casinos in the state of Iowa accepting sports bets, with four William Hill properties. Iowa is quite the interesting state in terms of betting law, as bettors have to register in-person until 2021 if they want to participate in online sports betting. You cannot bet on in-state college props bets, must be 21 or over, but Iowa allows online sports betting.
Oddly enough, Oregon used to offer parlay card betting in 1989, but that did not last. In 2019, a tribal casino (Chinook Winds Casino Resort) opened sports betting options, and there are nine total tribal casinos that offer sports betting.
In addition, non-tribal residents can bet in the state as well. The Oregon Lottery released a betting application that allows mobile betting inside the confines of the state.
Indiana Sports Betting is flying out of the gates in the mid-west at a much faster pace than expected. With Illinois sports betting delayed and Iowa regs calling for an 18 month hold on online/mobile, Indiana is thriving.
