Without a doubt, the New England Patriots were very disappointing in 2020-2021. They missed the playoffs, struggled to score, and did so without many of their top players who opted out for COVID-19 reasons. But so far this NFL offseason, the Patriots have been making some serious moves.
After the Patriots signed Cam Newton, their Super Bowl odds were +4000 at DraftKings Sportsbook. After an active first day in NFL free agency to add to Newton, their odds have moved up to +3300. Are the Patriots poised for a comeback?
New England has stormed into free agency in an atypical Patriots way, spending big money on two big weaknesses – former Titans’ TE Jonnu “Easy 💰” Smith and former Dolphins’ NT Davon Godchaux.

Patriots Sign Jonnu Smith
One thing that the Patriots needed last season was pass-catchers, and they signed arguably the best one available in free agency.
Jonnu Smith was the #Patriots number one pass catching target. Per source, that deal is done. He is headed to NE.

Per Adam Schefter, this deal was for four years and $50M, which includes $31.25M guaranteed. This is a lot of money for a tight end, which makes Smith a top-tier target for Cam Newton in 2021 and beyond. Smith is an athletic tight end who produced quite well in Tennessee.

Belichick Bolsters Defense to Increase Super Bowl Odds
Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick is a defensive football coach, but he was without a great one in 2021. That looks to be at least attempted to be remedied with the signing of Davon Godchaux, which is likely the first of many defensive signings to make the Patriots a Super Bowl contender again.
Former Dolphins’ NT Davon Godchaux agrees with the Patriots on a 2-year deal worth up to $16 million that includes $9 million fully guaranteed, his agent @DrewJRosenhaus tells ESPN.

While this is not a huge signing, nearly $8M per season for a nose tackle is a significant investment. Belichick certainly is looking to increase the Patriots’ odds to win the Super Bowl and return to the promised land sans Tom Brady.
In addition, the Patriots look like they are going after Matt Judon as well.
The #Patriots may not be done: They are making a major push to sign #Ravens pass-rusher Matt Judon, per me and @MikeGarafolo. Big move on D.

Patriots Free Agent Update
The Patriots have continued to make a splash in free agency, as they have spent nearly a quarter-million dollars in free agency already. Here’s a look at their signings so far.
Patriots now up to six FA signings, including five at perceived positions of need:
TE Jonnu Smith
DT Davon Godchaux
OLB Matt Judon
DB Jalen Mills
WR Nelson Agholor
WR Kendrick Bourne— Zack Cox (@ZackCoxNESN) March 15, 2021
Since the above tweet, the Patriots signed Hunter Henry as well as Deatrich Wise, Jr.
And New England strikes again: The Patriots are signing former Chargers' TE Hunter Henry to a three-year, $37.5 million deal, including $25 million guaranteed, per source.
Free agency's top two tight ends, Henry and Jonnu Smith, wind up in New England.

New England Patriots Super Bowl Odds
These moves are just the beginning of the NFL offseason, but there is no doubt that the Patriots are looking to increase their Super Bowl odds. Here’s a look a their current and opening at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Super Bowl Odds | Opening Odds | Current Odds |
New England Patriots | +4000 | +3300 |
Expect the Patriots to make plenty of other moves in order to boost their chances to win the Super Bowl, and they have a long way to go after free agency. They do have a top pick in the NFL Draft, as they could add either a quarterback, weapons, or defensive help.
