To golf fans, The Players Championship has been known as the “fifth major”. After the Masters, The Open, US Open, and PGA Championship, The Players Championship is without a doubt the most prestigious yearly tournament on the PGA Tour. Given that the tournament takes place on one of the most notable courses in the world in TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, that adds to the aura. Betting on golf has been around for a long time, but it’s only recently taken off with the legality of US sports betting becoming more and more popular.
It’s not only just Las Vegas sportsbooks offering golf bets, so there are plenty of ways to bet The Players Championship. Let’s take a look at the odds to win, some prop bets, and a long shot to win this year’s tournament.

Long Shot Betting Pick
Betting on golfers to win a tournament nearly always results in long odds. As we can see above, the “favorite” is +725 and every other golfer is at least +1100 to win The Players Championship. Betting on long shots to win in PGA can be very rewarding. Here are our long shot picks to win The Players Championship this year.
Some trends to consider for #ThePlayers
Eight of the last 10 winners of the Players had already bagged a T4 or better finish on Tour in the year of their win
The last 13 winners had already achieved a previous finish of 23rd or better at THE PLAYERS in a previous year
— Geoff (@thefantasygrind) March 9, 2020
As this tweet mentions, there are some trends to consider. We are looking for a golfer that has a T4 or better finish so far this season, and a top 23 finish last year at The Players. In addition, golfers that have had success on similar courses help the trend as well.
Bryson DeChambeau has one T4 finish this season and has finished top 10 in four of seven events. Last year at The Players, he finished -9 for T20. He is +2200 to win, which is not necessarily a long shot. Still worth betting on, though.
Hideki Matsuyama qualifies for this as well, as he has two T4 finishes this season and four top 10s in 11 events. Last year he finished T8 at -12, just four shots off the lead. Matsuyama is “only” +2200.
Our long shot betting pick for The Players Championship is Jason Day. Day finished T8 last year, and shot a 72 on the final day. Had he matched most above him he would have been in the top 3, easily. Day won this event in 2016, and so far in 2020 he has finished fourth in the AT&T Pro Am, and was T16 in the Farmers Insurance Open. At +7500 to win The Players Championship, Day is our long shot pick of the tournament. There is a reason he is +7500, as he withdrew with back stiffness last week from the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Keep an eye on his status, but that’s factored into the +7500. Other bets are DeChambeau and Matsuyama.
