Maryland Sports Betting

Maryland is one of many states to pass legislation on legal sports betting in 2021, and the state’s journey started with a voter decision in late 2020. As the voters and government both agreed, legal sports betting was able to come to the state of Maryland. With that in mind, DraftKings Sportsbook was set to enter the state and become one of the prominent sportsbooks in the jurisdiction.

Let’s take a look at DraftKings Sportsbook Maryland, how it became law, what sports you can bet on, top welcome bonuses and more.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Maryland?

Maryland is one of the few states in the United States of America that allows for residents to wager on some laws in even-numbered years. That is what happened on election day in 2020, where Maryland residents voted heavily in favor of allowing legal sports betting to come to the state. As for lawmakers themselves, it is up to them to finalize the bills that are set to bring legal sports betting and mobile betting to the state as soon as possible.

As Danny Small discussed, the Maryland House passed the initial sports betting law which is sent to the Senate, then to the Governor if all is clear. If you are looking to follow that bill or get the details, you can find that on the Maryland government site, here. Here is the latest timeline

  • March 11th 2021 – HB940 passed in the House 129-10
  • March 15th 2021 – Scheduled hearing for March 25th in the Senate
  • March 25th 2021 – Senate hearing.
  • April – Sports betting passes.
  • May – Sports betting set to launch before NFL season in 2021.

Assuming all goes through, it will allow for sports betting to be officially legislated and open for business in the state of Maryland. This allows DraftKings Sportsbook (and others) to enter the state. The plan would call for up to nearly 40 licenses in the state, opening the doors for all types of platforms.
