We have a new state entering the sports betting fray, Rhode Island. That’s right, Twin River Casino in Rhode Island will officially launch their sports betting, becoming the first state in New England to do so.
Twin River Sportsbook Goes Live
Rhode Island lawmaker Dominick Ruggerio said that the first bets will be able to be taken around Thanksgiving. Other than Twin River, a fellow Rhode Island casino, Tiverton Casino, will be offering sports betting in December as well.
The Twin River Casino in Lincoln is currently the only location in all of New England where a legal sports bet can be placed. The casino plans to introduce sports betting in two phases:
1- Phase One: A traditional brick and mortar sportsbook setup where bets can be placed on all major sports in the U.S. Bets on Rhode Island sports teams, which includes RI University, cannot be made.
2- Phase Two: A new 3,600-square-foot sports betting lounge is scheduled for completion sometime in December. The lounge will have approximately 100 TV monitors, along with a bar and food service.
Rhode Island Sports Betting Revenue
The state will benefit greatly from betting, with over 50 percent of the revenue from wagering going directly to the state, while the remaining 49 percent will be split between William Hill (32 percent) and Twin (17 percent).
Ruggerio is also hopeful that online and mobile betting applications will come into play sooner rather than later.
Pennsylvania recently started taking bets, too, and the state should see up for $12 billion in annually placed bets, which sheds some light on the potential that sports betting can give to the smaller state of Rhode Island.
The other states that have already legalized sports betting in the USA are Delaware, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
