Super Bowl National Anthem Prop Bets, Odds & Picks

By Jason Ziernicki

Super Bowl 54 is this weekend, and everyone is focused on getting their bets in for the Big Game. From spreads to totals to moneylines, the legal sports betting industry in the US has been back and forth on who to bet between the Chiefs and 49ers. What may come as a shock to some, is that Super Bowl prop bets are just as popular as the traditional betting styles.

Sunday, February 2nd, 2020 in Miami, Florida will be Super Bowl 54, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 EST. Just before kickoff though, the National Anthem will be performed by Demi Lovato, who just sang at this year’s Grammy Awards. What does this mean? The first bet of the evening will be settled before kickoff. One of the more popular prop bets each year on the Super Bowl is just how long will the National Anthem be. Let’s take a look at Super Bowl 54’s National Anthem odds, trends, betting history, and picks as bettors will have action on just how long Lovato’s rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” is.

DraftKings Sportsbook Only Has 1 Option

We have to remember that state regulators have had a say in the types of bets that can be offered at legal sportsbooks. This is not your off-shore sportsbook offering for Super Bowl props. It was a few weeks back that Indiana Sports Betting approved Gatorade Shower props bets for their legal sportsbooks.DraftKings has one Super Bowl prop bet that includes the National Anthem.

Will any scoring drive take less time than the singing of the National Anthem? You can bet this prop bet under “Novelty Props” at DraftKings Sportsbook in NJ, PA, Indiana, WV, and NH.

PointsBet Has A Few More National Anthem Bets

PointsBet online sportsbook and mobile app is available in NJ and Iowa. They are offering 3 prop bets on the Natonal Anthem, of which none include Demi Lovato.

Props at other sportsbooks are currently coming in at around two minutes, even. Until the legal sportsbooks release their National Anthem odds, we shall assume 2:00. At the two-minute mark, there is history to dig into to make sure we make the best bet on over or under Demi Lovato’s duration, assuming it is released at 2:00.Stay tuned as we will update the National Anthem odds as they are released.

Demi Lovato National Anthem History

This is not the first time that Demi Lovato has performed the National Anthem, which means there is past history to decipher and project to help this year’s prop bet. Let’s take a look:

Event Year National Anthem Length
McGregor vs. Mayweather 2017 2:12
Game 4 MLB World Series 2015 1:58
Game 4 MLB World Series 2012 1:51
Game 5 MLB World Series 2011 1:48
NFL Thanksgiving Game 2008 1:52
MMA Event 2007 1:33

Based on this data, Lovato’s renditions of the anthem have steadily increased with time. 1:33 is a very quick version of the Star Spangled Banner, and her most recent rendition before the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight in 2017 was over 2:00. Average seems to suggest betting under 2:00, but given how Lovato has increased the duration of the time of the song nearly each time, over 2:00 may be the way sharp bettors are leaning. As Lovato has gotten older, she has become clearly focused on elongating the song. Add a very long version of her song at the 2020 Grammy’s and there is a lot of reasons to consider betting the over of 2:00. Let’s take a look at the last dozen anthem performers in the Super Bowl, offering some more perspective.

National Anthem Length History

Year Super Bowl Anthem Performer National Anthem Length
2019 Gladys Knight 2:01
2018 Pink 1:53
2017 Luke Bryant 2:04
2016 Lady Gaga 2:09
2015 Idina Menzel 2:04
2014 Renee Fleming 1:54
2013 Alicia Keys 2:35
2012 Kelly Clarkson 1:34
2011 Christiana Aguilera 1:54
2010 Carrie Underwood 1:47
2009 Jennifer Hudson 2:10
2008 Jordin Sparks 1:54

With this data of the last 12 years, the average is 1:59, with Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson being the outliers at 2:35 and 1:34, respectively. With Lovato’s most recent rendition of 2:12, paired with the trend of lengths increasing and four of the last five performers going over 2:00, trends are showing one thing. Our pick is the over 2:00 for Demi Lovato’s rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” before Super Bowl 54 on Sunday.

Other Super Bowl National Anthem Props

The length of the National Anthem is just one prop bet for the anthem, as some books may look at releasing more and more bets based around the anthem. In the past we have seen such bets that may ask:

  • Will Demi Lovato be wearing a dress, gown or a skirt to sing the National Anthem?
  • What will Demi Lovato’s hair color be?
  • Will the National Anthem take longer than any scoring drive in the Super Bowl?
  • Will Demi Lovato forget any words in the National Anthem?
  • Will any player kneel during the National Anthem?
  • What color will Demi Lovato’s microphone be?
  • Will there be fireworks after “Bombs Bursting in Air” during the National Anthem?

2019 Gladys Knight Controversy

Does anyone remember last year’s National Anthem?

At the 2:17 mark of the above video, Gladys Knight finishes the song. But them she adds another “The Brave”, which adds another 12 seconds or so to the total. This brings up a great point for all sportsbooks as they set their odds. Books must clarify what counts as the end of the song. Traditionally, the rule has been after the first “brave”, but this video shows that it is quite clear Knight did not end the song until the final brave. Before you bet on the National Anthem length this year, be sure to clarify what the rules are.
