The Big Ten wasn’t planning on having a season until recently, but Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields will only have eight games to prove himself against the likes of D’Eriq King and Trevor Lawrence. So far, not playing hasn’t hurt Fields’ chances to win the award in the eyes of oddsmakers.
Over the weekend, King threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns in a win over a solid Louisville squad. Lawrence, on the other hand, only threw the ball nine times in a blowout win over Citadel. He did manage to throw for three scores on those nine throws, but Dabo Swinney opted to pull him from the game early and let some of his other quarterbacks get some reps.
The Heisman race is chock full of quarterbacks this year. The top eight favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook are quarterbacks. Two Big 12 passers, Sam Ehlinger and Spencer Rattler, are fourth and fifth on the list to win the Heisman.
The first non-quarterback that shows up on this list is Travis Etienne, a running back from Clemson. Etienne is off to a solid start to the season, but it’s likely that he’ll be overshadowed by his teammate, Lawrence, when it comes to the voting.
These odds should continue to shift and change as the season goes on. Although Week 3 of the season is still in the books, there is still a long way to go in this bizarre 2020 college football season.
