Virginia! In a sudden change of events, it looks like the commonwealth of Virginia will offer legal sports betting today, Thursday January 21st, 2021. Per FanDuel Sportsbook’s tweet below, they will be the first sportsbook to enter the state and will certainly have at least one day to get ahead of the competition when it comes to market share.
FanDuel Sportsbook will not be the only sportsbook to enter Virginia, but it will be the first. Let’s take a look below at launch details, what Virginians can wager on this weekend in sports, and a look at other sportsbooks that may potentially be in the state soon enough.

FanDuel Sportsbook Launches in Virginia
New to sports betting in Virginia? Most are, given that Virginia has not allowed legal sports betting to this point. As of 5 PM EST on Thursday, FanDuel Sportsbook is set to go live in the state which gives Virginia its first legal sportsbook. This is tremendous timing with a terrific weekend of sports ahead of us, but it also gives Virginia a leg up on surrounding states as Maryland, Delaware, and North Carolina do not have mobile wagering.
The unexpected part of this launch is that Virginia only passed legislation halfway through 2020, and it usually takes up to a year for rules and execution to take place. Virginia worked quickly though, and they will be able to take advantage of the NFL Playoffs, NBA season, CBB, and more.

The timing could not have been more perfect for Virginia, as this weekend looks to be the early favorite for one of the better sports weekends in 2021. Not only will we have the NFL playoffs with the NFC Championship and AFC Championship, but there is a Conor McGregor fight at UFC 257 as well on Saturday night.
The NFL playoffs is quite the attraction for sports bettors, as it leads to the most-wagered on single event of the year in the Super Bowl. Virginia will be able to take legal bets during this event, to help raise revenue for the state.
Expect to wager on the following sports in Virginia right away:
