After a miraculous comeback to play football in 2020, the Washington Football Team has decided to move on from QB Alex Smith. The move will save Washington $14.9M in cap space as it looks to bolster the roster in the offseason via free agency and the NFL Draft.
Adam Schefter broke the news early Friday morning.
Alex Smith, the Comeback Player of the Year, will not be coming back to Washington. The team officially released him today, making him a free agent and saving the WFT $14.9 million against the cap.

Washington Football Team Super Bowl Odds
At DraftKings Sportsbook, the Washington Football Team’s Super Bowl odds are +6000, and a move will certainly happen after they get their starting quarterback for the 2021-2022 season. Washington is, as many experts would debate, a team that is a quarterback away from being very competitive in the NFL next season. They won the division last year, but with a poor overall record mostly due to bad quarterback play from Smith, Haskins, and others.
If the Football Team adds a quarterback in the NFL Draft or free agency, those odds will skyrocket from +6000, so the best time to wager on them is now. Here are some possible candidates in the draft for Washington:
- Trey Lance
- Mac Jones
- Justin Fields
If the Football Team decides to sign a quarterback in free agency, we could see one of the following under center for them next season:
- Ryan Fitzpatrick
- Jameis Winston
- Dak Prescott (unlikely)
- Mitchell Trubisky
