Ever since West Virginia legalized sports betting in 2018, Wheeling Island Sportsbook has been a massive casino for bettors in the Mountain State to bet in person and a short time period online.
West Virginia Sports Betting players were using the “Bet Lucky” app, which was operated by Miommni Gaming via Delaware North, who owns Wheeling Island Sportsbook and partnered with Miomni Gaming.
Unfortunately, there was a dispute between Miomni and a technology provider for the application’s data, and the app has not worked since it went dark, three months after launch.
This happened in early March 2019, and litigation was pushed by Delaware North against Miomni in April, but nothing has come about that situation.
Miomni Gaming and Wheeling Island
Essentially, since Miomni Gaming has the “contract” to offer the technology for the Bet Lucky app, the contract has to be terminated in order for Delaware North to offer sports betting at its casinos and applications with another provider.
Glen White, director of communications for Delaware North eluded to this via Theintelligencer:
“We continue to work toward enlisting a new technology partner for sports wagering in West Virginia and reopening the sportsbooks at our Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras casinos. We will make an announcement when that process is complete.”
With sports betting operations ceased, Wheeling Island talks about their plans to come back via their website:
“We have notified the West Virginia Lottery Commission that Delaware North is taking steps to terminate its partnership with Miomni Gaming, our management services provider in West Virginia. Since March 6, Miomni’s contract dispute with third-party technology supplier Entergaming has resulted in our inability to accept new sports wagers at our Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras casino sports-betting operations as well as via the BetLucky.com mobile app.
We are evaluating all options to once again provide sports wagering services, and we want our customers to know that identifying and implementing a solution could take several months or longer. In the meantime, we are continuing to honor and redeem all resulted bets and providing our customers with detailed information about how they can access their accounts and withdraw their funds.”
With no immediate updates on exactly when, we are all waiting for this situation to resolve as it has left some West Virginia bettors with a bad taste in their mouth.
Where Can I Bet in West Virginia?
Despite the issues with “Bet Lucky” and Wheeling Island, there are still plenty of other options in West Virginia where you can bet.
You can currently bet within West Virginia state lines online from the comforts of your own mobile device with these betting apps:
Despite the poor experiences bettors may have had with the “Bet Lucky” app, FanDuel and DraftKings remain two of the best applications for user experience and have had success in many other states, and West Virginia so far. Bettors should feel comfortable with using either application in West Virginia.
