The story of the NFL Draft was the San Francisco 49ers and what they would do with the third pick in the draft. After news was reported that Lawrence and Wilson were set to be the first two picks, all the attention fell to who the 49ers would take between Justin Fields, Mac Jones, and Trey Lance. Of course, they took Lance which leads us to this betting market of who will start for the 49ers in Week 1.
Let’s take a look at the odds and candidates for who could be the Week 1 starter at quarterback for San Francisco.
Odds to be 49ers Starting QB in Week 1 2021
Here is a look at the latest odds to be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season. Odds are courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook.
|Quarterback||Odds to be 49ers Week 1 Starter|
Garoppolo is the favorite at -278 to start in Week 1 for the 49ers, with Lance being +220. Josh Rosen and Nate Sudfeld are also in San Francisco, but the only way either of them start in Week 1 is in case of a crazy slew of injuries. Garoppolo being such a heavy favorite is surprising, given the draft capital the 49ers traded to move up for Trey Lance.
With that said, Lance has not played that many college games and comes from North Dakota State, where he has only thrown 30 total passes since the end of the 2019 season due to no football in 2020 for that level of NCAA football.
There is no dismissing Lance’s talent though, as he will start for the 49ers at some point.
Is Jimmy Garoppolo the 49ers Starting QB?
Entering the NFL offseason, Jimmy Garoppolo was the starter for the 49ers, without a doubt. Then, the 49ers traded a few future first-round picks to move up to third overall in the NFL Draft. That sort of draft capital only meant one thing for the 49ers, and that a new quarterback would be drafted.
The Niners took Trey Lance, but Garoppolo remains under contract and on the roster. Will he be the starter? The 49ers owner is fine with that, per a recent report.

Sitting Trey Lance for two years seems a bit much, but having him sit for one year under Garoppolo is certainly in play as many teams and quarterbacks have gone that route before. With that said, spending three first round picks to move up for a player in order to sit him does not seem likely.
This is a tad different situation than in Chicago where Justin Fields may sit for a year, as he was not a part of a three-first-round draft capital trade.
