If you like Power 5 football, Week 1 has you covered. There are crossover matchups between big conferences like Alabama vs. Miami (FL) and even big games between conference rivals like the Big Ten’s Michigan State and Northwestern.
Alabama is a massive favorite (-18.5) over Miami and we can’t say we’re surprised. Nick Saban’s juggernaut always seems to dominate opponents early in the season. Similarly, oddsmakers have Michigan (-17.5) as a three-score favorite over in-state rival Western Michigan.
Georgia vs. Clemson Headlines Week 1
Georgia vs. Clemson is the one matchup that everyone is waiting to see. Both teams are expected to be among the top five teams in the country and legitimate contenders to make the College Football Playoff. It feels like there are always a handful of teams who have a shot year in and year out. Georgia and Clemson are always in that mix.
Clemson may have lost star quarterback Trevor Lawrence to the NFL Draft, but they reload as well as any team in the country. D.J. Uiagalelei is going to be taking over for him, but we already saw that promising young star when Lawrence was out for COVID last season.
Georgia’s last appearance in the CFP was in 2017, so it’s safe to assume that the Bulldogs feel like they are long overdue for a return. Obviously, a loss to Clemson in Week 1 wouldn’t destroy their chances at a CFP invite, but a win would go a long way with voters.
Clemson is the slight favorite for this neutral site game that will be played in Charlotte. That’s not a surprise considering the fact that they have gone to six consecutive CFPs, winning two National Championships in the process.
William Hill’s College Football Futures
There are going to be more than a few title contenders on primetime in Week 1. We all know the usual suspects when it comes to National Championship futures — Alabama, Clemson, Georgia — but there is tremendous value on a few of the other teams listed on William Hill Sportsbook.
Bettors who think the LSU Tigers are in for a bounce-back season could grab them at +3000. LSU was a disaster in 2020, but they were a well-oiled machine in 2019. And like any great SEC team, they are constantly reloading with five-star talent.
Notre Dame is another dark-horse candidate to win it all. Although they have had no success in the College Football Playoff yet, they have made it into the dance in two of the last three seasons.
