After Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill in late 2019, Michigan was legally able to start building their sports betting offerings. From legislation to regulation to execution, Michigan looks to be the next state to offer full-access sports betting. William Hill US joins PointBet, FOXBet, and likely many others in Michigan before official launch, sometime before football season in 2020. William Hill, “America’s leading sports betting company”, per the release, will join the state of Michigan after partnering with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. The partnership has quite a few details, let’s dive into it.
Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Partners with William Hill
The partnership was signed and made official in late February, and will make William Hill Sportsbook the official and exclusive online sports betting and online casino operator for the Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. This is a long-term partnership, and allows the operator to offer a few products in Michigan:
- Online Sportsbook
- Online Casino
- Retail Sportsbook
Joe Asher, CEO of William Hill US, expresses his elation: “We are pleased to have found a great partner in the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and look forward to working with the Tribe to bring a leading retail and online sports betting experience to sports fans in Michigan. Michigan will be a key state in William Hill’s U.S. expansion due to its large population and deep rooted-sports culture with so many popular college and pro sports teams.”
Michael Schrader, the CEO of Grand Traverse Resort and Casinos also shared his thoughts on the partnership: “It was important for us to find a partner with a great sports betting and gaming brand that has proven experience throughout the US market. William Hill’s expertise in sports betting operations and marketing and strategic media partnerships will ensure that we are able to attract customers from throughout the State of Michigan to the online products while offering another great amenity to attract guests to our casinos. We look forward to working with William Hill to develop the best sports book in northern Michigan at Turtle Creek Casino.”
William Hill Sportsbook at Onyx Sports Bar in Turtle Creek Casino?
As Schrader eluded to, there will be a William Hill Sportsbook at Turtle Creek Casino, in the Onyx Sports Bar. There will also be a second location (satellite) at Leelanau Sands Casino. Both sides expect the retail sportsbook to be ready to go by the 2020 NFL season, of course pending approval and regulation. Of course, this is only a small step in this partnership as William Hill plans to offer and operate an online sportsbook and online casion when permitted in Michigan. Expect that to come at the end of 2020, or early 2021.
When Can I Bet in Michigan?
Per our Michigan page, we expect Michigan to offer online sports betting in 2021. But, given the news from this press release between William Hill and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians indicating the sportsbook will be ready for football season in 2020, maybe we will see retail sports betting before 2021.
